WP1 - Media transfer tool and legal studies

The aim of this work package is to describe a flexible concept to transfer the content of various digital media carriers into image files for emulation environments as well as to study the issues of legality concerning the transfer of copyrighted material between media and in emulation environments

As a result of legal advice obtained during the first two years of KEEP, the approach of the work package will be to integrate existing media transfer tools into a transfer framework, created either through the extension of the PLANETS Interoperability Framework or via the creation of a framework building on other existing services into which existing tools will be ‘wrapped’. Experiments will be conducted to investigate and document experiences with the selected framework. These will deliver detailed media transfer knowledge in order to support future development.

In three tasks of preliminary research, the legal issues of media transfer as well as the existing image file formats and tools will be analyzed, especially by the cultural heritage institutions based on their experiences (DNB, BnF, CSM and KB). These institutions will also define the user requirements for a practical solution for dealing with different digital media carriers in a transfer tools framework. As a result of the evaluation of existing tools there could be a need for further more generic tools to meet the requirements by the cultural heritage institutions. Such tools may be developed by JOG, if required. The described concept of a transfer tools framework based on the specified user requirements will be investigated through several prototypes focusing on the major key aspects of media transfer by UPHEC.
